What Is Shilajit? Formation, Composition and Traditional Use
Shilajit is a mineral-rich exudate that seeps from Himalayan rock. Here is how it forms, what is actually in it, how Ayurveda has used it, and what the research does and does not show.
Shilajit is a sticky, blackish-brown substance that seeps out of rock faces in high mountain ranges during the warm months. In India it is most associated with the Himalayas, but the same material is collected in the Altai, Caucasus and Tibetan ranges, where it goes by other names — mumijo, moomiyo, brag-shun. In Sanskrit texts it appears as shilajatu, usually glossed as "conqueror of rocks" or "rock invincible".
It is not a plant, not a resin in the botanical sense, and not a mineral in the geological sense. That in-between quality is why it is so often described badly.
How shilajit forms
The prevailing explanation is that shilajit is the end product of very slow plant decomposition. Over centuries, layers of organic matter — mosses, liverworts, Euphorbia and Trifolium species among those commonly cited — became compressed between rock strata. Under pressure, at altitude, with microbial activity and without the oxygen that would let it rot away, that material humified: it broke down into stable, carbon-rich compounds rather than disappearing.
What is left percolates through the rock and, when summer temperatures rise, oozes out of crevices as a tar-like mass. Collectors scrape it from the rock face by hand. Raw material at this stage contains everything the rock had to offer, which is exactly why it cannot be eaten as collected.
The altitude matters for a practical reason more than a mystical one: the higher and more remote the collection site, the less industrial and agricultural contamination there tends to be in the surrounding environment.
What is actually in it
Shilajit's composition varies by source, which is worth stating plainly — two jars from different mountains are not the same product. Broadly, analyses consistently find:
Fulvic acid. The most-discussed component, typically the headline number on any label. Fulvic acid is a low-molecular-weight humic substance, water soluble across the pH range, and is thought to act as a carrier that helps other compounds cross membranes. Humic acid. Larger, less soluble humic substances. Present in meaningful quantity, and usually not advertised.
Dibenzo-α-pyrones (DBPs) and DBP-chromoproteins. These get less marketing attention than fulvic acid but are the compounds several researchers treat as shilajit's more distinctive markers, since they are far less common in ordinary soil humus.
Trace minerals. Iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium and dozens more, in small amounts. The "85+ minerals" figure that appears across the category comes from elemental analyses that count everything detectable — it is a real number, but it describes trace presence, not a meaningful dose of any single mineral.
Water, and whatever else the source rock contained. Including, in unpurified material, things you do not want.
Purification is not optional
This is the part of the shilajit story that gets skipped, and it is the part that matters most for safety.
Raw shilajit scraped off a rock can carry heavy metals — lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium — along with mycotoxins and free radicals, picked up from the geology and environment it formed in. Ayurveda has never treated the raw material as consumable. Classical preparation calls for shodhana: repeated dissolution, filtration and controlled drying, traditionally using water or decoctions, to separate the usable extract from the rock matter and contaminants.
Modern producers do the same thing with better instrumentation, and the finished product should be tested by an accredited laboratory to confirm it worked. A certificate of analysis showing heavy metals within permissible limits is the single most useful document a shilajit seller can show you. Ours are published at /lab-reports.
Products sold as "raw", "unprocessed" or "straight from the mountain" are advertising the absence of the most important step.
How Ayurveda has used it
In Ayurvedic practice shilajit is classed as a rasayana — broadly, a rejuvenative — and is traditionally taken in small quantities dissolved in warm water or milk. It appears in classical formulations alongside other herbs rather than as a standalone.
Traditional use is a reason to take something seriously enough to study it. It is not, on its own, evidence that it works for a specific modern claim, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling rather than explaining.
What the research shows — and what it does not
Human research on shilajit exists but is limited: mostly small trials, often single-site, frequently industry-funded, and rarely replicated. Published work has looked at areas including exercise performance and fatigue, male reproductive parameters, testosterone levels in older men, and altitude adaptation. Some of these studies report positive findings.
The honest summary is that the evidence base is preliminary. Small trials generate hypotheses; they do not establish effects. Where you see confident claims that shilajit "boosts testosterone by X%" or "increases stamina by Y%", you are looking at a marketing extrapolation from a study far too small to carry it.
What can be said without stretching:
- Shilajit has been consumed in the Indian subcontinent for a very long time.
- Its composition is well characterised and genuinely unusual.
- Early human research is promising enough that more of it is being done.
- Purified, lab-tested material has a good safety record at traditional doses.
That is a reasonable basis for using it. It is not a basis for treating it as medicine.
Who should not take it
Shilajit is not appropriate for everyone. Avoid it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and speak to a doctor first if you have haemochromatosis or another iron-overload condition, gout or high uric acid, sickle cell disease, or thalassaemia. If you take prescription medication — particularly for blood pressure or diabetes — check for interactions before starting.
Children should not take it without medical supervision.
Choosing between forms
Shilajit is sold as resin, powder, capsules and, increasingly, gummies. These are not equivalent, and the differences are mostly about how much actual shilajit you are getting per serving versus how much filler. We have covered the trade-offs in detail in resin vs capsule vs powder.
