Fulvic Acid in Shilajit: What the Percentage on the Label Means

Brands advertise 50%, 75%, even 90% fulvic acid. The number depends as much on the test method as on the product. Here is how to read it and what it does not tell you.

Fulvic acid is the number every shilajit brand puts on the front of the jar, and it is the number customers compare. It is also the number most likely to be misleading — not usually because anyone lied, but because "fulvic acid content" is not a single, standardised measurement.

What fulvic acid is

Fulvic acid is not one molecule. It is a class of low-molecular-weight organic compounds produced when plant matter humifies — the same process that makes shilajit in the first place. It is defined operationally, by how it behaves: humic substances that stay soluble in water across the whole pH range, including in acid.

That solubility is why it gets attention. Fulvic acid molecules are small and carry many oxygen-containing functional groups, which lets them bind metal ions and, the argument goes, help carry them across membranes. That is the basis for describing it as a "carrier" — a reasonable inference from its chemistry, not a proven mechanism in humans.

It occurs in soil, peat, compost and freshwater. Shilajit is unusual for how concentrated it is, not for containing it at all.

Why the percentage varies so much

Here is the part that matters when comparing jars.

Different assay methods return different numbers from the same sample.

Several methods are in use across the industry — colorimetric assays, gravimetric extraction procedures, and various in-house protocols — and they do not measure quite the same thing. Some capture a broader slice of humic substances than others. A sample that reads one figure by one method can read considerably higher or lower by another.

This has a practical consequence: a "75% fulvic acid" claim from one brand and a "90%" claim from another are not comparable unless both state the method. Most do not. When a brand publishes a percentage with no method attached, the number is closer to marketing copy than to data.

There is a second issue. Some labels report "fulvic acid equivalent" or lump fulvic and humic acids into a single figure. Both are legitimate things to measure and neither is the same as fulvic acid content. Read the wording, not the headline.

What a high percentage does not tell you

It does not tell you the material is safe. Fulvic acid content and heavy metal content are independent. A jar can be high in one and unacceptable in the other. The certificate of analysis for lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium is a separate document and a more important one.

It does not tell you the material is more effective. There is no established dose-response relationship in humans linking fulvic acid percentage to any outcome. Higher is assumed better; it is not demonstrated better.

It does not tell you the whole composition. Shilajit's other well-studied constituents — dibenzo-α-pyrones and DBP-chromoproteins in particular — get almost no label space, despite being more distinctive markers of genuine shilajit than fulvic acid, which is common in ordinary soil humus. A product optimised purely to report a high fulvic number is not necessarily a better shilajit.

How to read a fulvic acid claim properly

Ask four questions:

  1. What method was used? If it is not stated, the number is not comparable to anything.
  2. Which lab ran it? Third-party and accredited, or internal?
  3. Which batch? A percentage from a batch tested two years ago says nothing about the jar in your hand.
  4. Is it fulvic acid, or fulvic-plus-humic, or "fulvic equivalent"? These are three different figures.

A brand that answers all four is being straight with you. One that answers none is asking you to compare its adjective to someone else's adjective.

What the research says about fulvic acid itself

Fulvic acid has been studied outside the shilajit context — in agriculture extensively, in human health far less. Laboratory work has looked at antioxidant behaviour and metal binding; there is some clinical interest in inflammatory and cognitive endpoints.

As with shilajit generally, the human evidence is early. Small studies, limited replication. Enough to justify further research; not enough to justify the confident claims that appear in category marketing.

Treating fulvic acid percentage as a proxy for product quality is understandable — it is the only number most brands give you. It is just a much weaker proxy than the industry's use of it implies.

The number that should carry more weight

If you are choosing between two jars and can only check one thing, check the heavy metals panel, not the fulvic acid percentage. One tells you whether the product is safe to take daily for months. The other tells you where a marketing team landed after picking an assay.
